Background of the Study
Online education has seen a rapid expansion, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, with universities adopting digital platforms for teaching and assessment. However, the shift to online learning has raised concerns about maintaining academic integrity during online examinations. Traditional methods of monitoring students during in-person exams are no longer applicable in the online environment, leading to an increase in cheating, plagiarism, and other dishonest practices. To address these challenges, many institutions are turning to Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered proctoring systems to ensure that online exams are secure and fair. AI proctoring systems use machine learning algorithms to monitor students during exams, detecting suspicious behavior such as unauthorized device usage, face masking, or impersonation.

The University of Abuja, located in Gwagwalada LGA, FCT Abuja, has increasingly adopted online examinations to accommodate a diverse student body. Despite the benefits of online exams, there is a need to enhance the integrity of these assessments by implementing robust proctoring systems. This study will explore the effectiveness of AI-powered proctoring systems in enhancing academic integrity during online exams at the University of Abuja. By leveraging AI technology, the research will assess the potential of automated proctoring to detect and prevent cheating during online assessments.

Statement of the Problem
The transition to online examinations at the University of Abuja has raised concerns about maintaining academic integrity. Traditional in-person proctoring techniques cannot be applied to online exams, and as a result, there is an increased risk of academic dishonesty. Cheating during online exams, such as impersonation and unauthorized assistance, undermines the credibility of the university's assessments. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of AI-powered proctoring systems in enhancing the integrity of online exams and reducing the occurrence of academic dishonesty at the University of Abuja.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the effectiveness of AI-powered proctoring systems in detecting academic dishonesty during online examinations at the University of Abuja.

2. To assess student and faculty perceptions of AI-powered proctoring systems for online exams.

3. To propose recommendations for improving academic integrity in online assessments through AI technology at the University of Abuja.

Research Questions

1. How effective is AI-powered proctoring in detecting academic dishonesty during online exams at the University of Abuja?

2. What are the perceptions of students and faculty regarding the use of AI-powered proctoring systems in online exams?

3. How can AI-powered proctoring systems be improved to enhance academic integrity in online examinations at the University of Abuja?

Research Hypotheses

1. AI-powered proctoring systems are more effective in detecting academic dishonesty compared to traditional manual proctoring methods.

2. Students and faculty have positive perceptions of AI-powered proctoring systems for maintaining academic integrity in online exams.

3. Implementing AI-powered proctoring systems will significantly reduce incidents of cheating during online examinations at the University of Abuja.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the effectiveness of AI-powered proctoring systems in maintaining academic integrity during online exams. By evaluating the system's ability to detect cheating, the research will help the University of Abuja ensure that online assessments are conducted fairly and securely. The findings will also contribute to the growing body of knowledge on AI in education, offering recommendations for universities seeking to implement similar technologies to enhance the integrity of online assessments.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on evaluating the use of AI-powered proctoring systems for online examinations at the University of Abuja, located in Gwagwalada LGA, FCT Abuja. The research will involve both students and faculty members but will not extend to other universities or educational institutions. The scope is limited to the examination of AI proctoring systems and does not address other aspects of online learning, such as content delivery or student engagement.
